Rosemary – Not Just a Pretty Smell!

Simon and Garfunkel sang about it, grandmas and cooking enthusiasts love it, and it has a super distinctive pleasant smell. But Rosemary also has health benefits that you might not know about. Burning rosemary oil is thought to help increase memory and consuming it could help calm digestive complaints. Interestingly, there’s a village in southwest Italy whose residents cook traditional recipes containing abundant amounts of rosemary, and who live well into old age! Coincidence? We think not.

Rosemary has been used in medicine and in rituals for thousands of years. From ancient Greek students putting it in their hair whilst they revised and took exams, to our ancestors in the Middle Ages using it to ward off evil spirits and the black plague. Rosemary supplements now have a whole host of uses and benefits and they’re all linked to the active ingredient in rosemary, carnosic acid.

Antioxidant Heavyweight

Rosemary has powerful antioxidant qualities that are only just being fully discovered. Antioxidants ‘mop up’ free radicals, unstable molecules of oxygen that build up in the body after exposure to pollution, cigarette smoke, and other toxins. They’re linked with causing some chronic diseases and inflammation, among other things. The more they’re eliminated, the better.

Antimicrobial Agent

Studies on carnosic acid have linked rosemary with having powerful antimicrobial properties. This means it can help to fight stomach bugs and colds, good news for those of us who simply don’t have the time to get sick.

Anti-Aging Hero

Due to its antioxidant properties, carnosic acid has also been linked with anti-aging potential. It helps to keep the layer of fats under the surface of the skin healthy. The healthier this so-called lipid layer, the plumper the skin, the plumper the skin, the more smooth and wrinkle-free it is. Hurrah!

Mood-Boosting Big Shot

Although it was thought that it was the smell of rosemary alone that could clear the mind, ease stress and anxiety and improve a low mood, studies have shown that consuming rosemary extract can have the same effect. It’s now thought that this is down to the active ingredient, carnosic acid.

Memory Enhancing Champ

Rosemary helps to clarify the mind so that we can focus and hold on to more information. It’s also now used to help stimulate cognitive brain activity in elderly people and those with dementia. The research is still being conducted but it’s an exciting area of research nonetheless.

Stomach Soothing Saint

If you suffer from a chronic stomach condition such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), then rosemary extract supplements could help ease your symptoms. They work to ease the discomfort of diarrhea, constipation, bloating, gas, and nausea. They may also help regulate bowel movements.
