How to Live a Sustainable Lifestyle, Starting Today

How to Live a Sustainable Lifestyle, Starting Today

Did you know that the U.S. is one of the most wasteful countries in the world? To give you a better idea, each person throws away more than 1,600 pounds of trash every year!

This means tons of unrecycled plastic ends up in the oceans. Given all that, it’s easy to see why more and more people are opting for eco-friendly options.

Want to do your part to protect the planet? Interested in learning how to live a sustainable lifestyle? If so, you’re on the right page!

We’ll be going over a few things that you can do below. So make sure to read the rest of the post!

4 Ways on How to Live a Sustainable Lifestyle

There are many ways that you can live more sustainably, but here are a few simple ways to get started.

1. Avoid Single-Use Plastic

What is single-use plastic you may ask? Plastic forks, produce bags at the grocery store, plastic packaging, and straws to name a few. These bags and utensils may be convenient but they’re not the best for the planet. Not only do they take hundreds of years to degrade, but they can also release toxins into the air.

I know it seems unavoidable in some instances, everything is packaged nowadays right?! Well even if you dont go full plastic-free, you can take steps to cut back. What should you use instead? Reusable products. Get your own collapsible straw to keep with you. Use reusable shopping and produce bags at the grocery store. And instead of that packaged pre-cut bell pepper, go for the whole pepper and cut it yourself when you are ready to eat!

These little steps add up when it comes to reducing plastic, and as you get used to your new plastic-free habits you can start incorporating new ways to reduce even further!

2. Recycle

Continuing on, the plastic you DO still use can be recycled! Along with any metal or paper goods. Begin by making an effort to recycle instead of putting things into the trash. That will reduce the need for extracting and processing raw materials, which will save energy and resources.

For example, you can make use of recycling pick up or curbside services. There are also drop-off locations that you can go for certain items such as electronics, cellphones, and batteries.

All you have to do is switch to a double trash can in your home. one side for recyclable goods, and the other for regular trash! It'll astonish you how many things can actually be recycled in your daily life.

If you want to take it a step further try composting! Your garden will thank you dearly and all those vegetable cuttings and coffee grounds will find a new purpose!

3. Avoid Bottled Water

This kind of goes back to the single-use plastic, but needs to be mentioned. Bottled water is responsible for millions of tons of plastic waste. Aside from the landfill, they also end up in the oceans bringing harm to the multitude of life that lives within them.

Instead of relying on bottled water, get yourself a reusable bottle! Not only are they super useful and environmentally friendly, they can be stylish too!

If you drink bottled water because you are not a fan of tap, maybe consider installing a filtration system to improve the flavor. Or a simple filtering pitcher to keep in the fridge! Some water bottles even have a built-in filter.

Remember, staying hydrated is important both for the body and the skin

4. Walk or Bike

When you're going somewhere nearby, try walking or taking the bicycle instead of the car. I know this one is not always a possibility but making the conscious decision to drive less will do wonders for the environment!

You'll be burning less gas (which is a non-sustainable resource) and contributing far less pollution! Plus, some extra exercise will do your mind and body wonders!

And there we have it—four simple to live a more sustainable lifestyle. As you can see, there are multiple things that you can do to help the environment!
