5 Ways to Surprise Dad this Father’s Day!
With Father’s Day fast approaching, your thoughts might be turning to bottles of cologne and novelty socks. But your gift can be so much better than that! Here’s our guide to the alternative, quirky and original gifts you can get your main man this year.
Take Him on a Spontaneous Trip
OK, if your dad is a busy man, then the spontaneity aspect may need to be a little less impulsive, and you may need to get him to commit to an actual date in the diary. But asking him to keep the day or the weekend free doesn’t mean you have to tell him where you’re going!
You could take him to his favorite childhood park for a picnic, or to the beach that brings back happy memories of family day trips. Or somewhere completely new that he’s mentioned before that he’d love to visit.
Homemade gifts mean so much more than buying a token gift that any other dad in the land could also be receiving.
Try brewing your own beer or wine, or even go as far as learning a whole new skill at evening school to make him something. Woodcraft, metalwork skills, and even glass blowing can all be immense fun, and you can add to his collections as you get better each year!
If you’re a keen baker, make him some of his favorite cakes or bread, and if you’re a whizz on the sewing machine, try making him something he can wear. Even if you only have basic hand sewing skills you can still put them to use – embroider his initials into some beautiful silk handkerchiefs or a woolen blanket to keep him warm.
Or Encourage Him to Get Crafty!
Your dad may be a frustrated oil painter, the next Chef Ramsay or a senior baseball player just waiting in the wings. Learning new skills is fantastic for helping to keep those brain cells firing healthily, especially good if your dad is approaching his senior years.
Music lessons, learning a new language or keeping things crafty with cookery lessons – the world is his oyster!
Spoil Him with His Favorite Meal
Father’s Day doesn’t have to be extravagant. Making his favorite meal is a simple gesture that tells him how much you love him. Make it a one on one or invite the whole family as a surprise.
You could also write a speech, to stand up and tell him just how much he means to you and why.
Organize a Family Portrait
Get all the family together and organize for a photographer to come and take your picture – something he can treasure for many years to come.
Place your dad at the center, and either make it a formal seated pose or get some action shots of you all laughing and having fun. The latter is often more natural and end up being the best even if you didn’t plan it that way!
Whatever you decide, make Sunday, June 19th is all about dad - he deserves it!
