Say hello to Ginkgo, the oldest living tree species on earth. It is so old that it is considered a ‘living fossil’ that has remained unchanged for over 200 million years!!
Today we know this tree mostly for its elegant fan-shaped leaves and foul-smelling fruits, but this specific tree has been a secret weapon of Chinese medicine for centuries! They used Ginkgo for its claimed cognitive benefits among other things.
This leaf is loaded with flavonoids, terpenoids, and phytochemicals and holds an antioxidant punch that protects your body from damaging free radicals.
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMM), "Gingko is widely used in Europe for treating dementia." Doctors started to use it because they thought it improved blood flow to the brain.
The benefits may include improved thinking and memory, better social behavior, and general cognitive function. Others believe Ginkgo may help alleviate symptoms of anxiety.
A study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research found that people with generalized anxiety disorder who took Ginkgo experienced better anxiety relief than those who took a placebo.
However, people who take anxiety medications should not use Ginkgo, because it may react with the medication.
If you are currently taking any medications, including anxiety medication, consult your doctor before adding Ginkgo to your health repertoire.Read more about Ginkgo here and here!
